Mountains To Savannah Ride
This itinerary gives you a wide range of exploring, inluding majestic Mount Kilimanjaro down to the active volcanic mountain of Oldoinyo Lengai. It’s a 15 day round trip where you will be able to explore many areas and have a life time experience of amazing people of this area and their life style, while enjoying the natural beauty and wild life.
Day 1:ARRIVAL TO ARUSHA
You will be picked at Kilimanjaro International Airport which is 50km from Arusha town, which is where you will spend your first night and heavy breakfast in the following day.
Depart after breakfast for 117 Km of tarmac road and 18Km of earth road where you will be passing on the front side of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro in Arusha and Moshi respectively, heading to Crater Lake Chala.
You will be arriving at Lake Chala for a hot lunch, soon after lunch you will have a tour around the lake and later, swimming. The crew will have already set the tents for you and you will spend a night here.
DAY3:LAKE CHALA TO WEST KILIMANJARO: 140KM
This day will be an awesome day since the ride will be from the Windward side of Mount Kilimanjaro to the leeward side of it. Two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo will be visible in the morning and evening. This is also a chance to pass over different Chagga people whom are regarded as the typical conservators of Mount Kilimanjaro. On this day we will take picnic lunch, and if we’re lucky we might be able to see mountain primates such as black and white coloubus monkeys and blue monkeys on the forest reserve.
The ride will pass over earth road and newly tarmacked roads, the distance will be 140km and we will be arrived at Kambi ya Tembo for dinner. The camp is situated in between Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru. You will have an awesome view of both old volcanic mountains.
DAY 4: WEST KILIMANJARO TO LONGIDO
On this day we will have breakfast and later check our motorcycles (bikes) for any maintenance needs. The road will be typical African roads; dust, sand and gravel up to the small town of Longido.
This day we will experience the Maasai culture, traditions and customs. Meals will be prepared in native way with high hygienic standards and Maasai warriors will give us a dance while enjoying the barbeque.
DAY 5: LONGIDO TO LAKE NATRON (OLDONYO LENGAI)
Adventure ride on a very dusty trails way down into a huge gorge where resident wildebeest, zebras, giraffes and antelopes gather for grazing land and water. The last 50 km in this leg is a sandy and stony track cut in the rift. Oldoinyo Lengai is a Maasai word which means “The Mountain of God.” It stands 2800m above sea level. Maasai people worships this Mountain since they believe that their God is living here.
We are going to spend three nights here under the foot of this Sacred Mountain of the Maasai. It is surrounded by deep calderas whose sides are covered with ashy volcanic lava.
The next day in the morning we are going to visit the largest soda ash lake,Lake Natron. The breeding site of flamingos in East Africa and later in the day we will have a swim at Engare Sero waterfalls. Midnight at 12:00 am we are going to hike Oldonyo Lengai, (this is optional).
Soon after those who hiked have relaxed, we are going to have an easy ride to the natural hot springs in the area and it also will be a good day for photographing. We spend last the night here with the Maasai community living around the area for more entertainment.
DAY 9: LAKE NATRON TO MTO WA MBU
Trick ride today, 120km of dust and sand trails to the growing town of Mto wa mbu- (river of mosquito). We are going to spend 2 nights here and are going to visit Lake Manyara National park by 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop up roof. Also we are going to have the chance to do cultural tour and shopping of different artworks which are hand made here.
DAY 11: MTO WA MBU TO LAKE EYASI
After breakfast, today we ride on Rift valley wall, passing another small growing town of Karatu. Lake Eyasi area is the only area where you can find the existing hunters and gatherers of East Africa, the Hadzabe and Datoga. We are going to spend a night here with these people and they will show you different skills in hunting and the food they eat.
DAY 12:LAKE EYASI TO MAGARA
Early in the morning soon after breakfast, we are going to break camp and ride down to the Rift valley wall. This is a rocky and hilly road where it passes through different altitude and vegetations down to Magara village which is adjacent to Lake Manyara National park. The camp is situated at the river bank where there is a good view of the rift valley wall and good view for a water fall nearby.
DAY 13: MAGARA TO BABATI TOWN
Breakfast will be at normal time today, soon after we will visit one of our community projects. Magara area is very prone to human-wildlife conflict and floods. We are going to visit the primary school here, which is one of our community projects where we are trying to help kids here and encourage to at least attend school and improve their future.
The ride will be on earth road up to great north road 60Km to Babati Town. Today we are going to spend a night in the lodge adjacent to Lake Babati.
DAY 14: BABATI TO KONDOA
Breakfast will be served by the lodge attendants. Today we travel along another relatively good road through the hills to Kolo. Kolo is famous for its ancient rock paintings in the caves near the town. The site is declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the coming generations also must have to see it. We will spend a day here with our picnic lunch, then we are going to ride back to Babati before sun set. At Lake Babati we are going to have a boat cruise and if we get lucky, we are going to visit the hippo pool and yellow throated otters.
DAY 15: BABATI TO ARUSHA
After big breakfast we ride on the Great north road to get back to Arusha, its relatively good road and 180km on tarmac. Cold drinks and a hot shower will be waiting for you in Arusha City.
This will be the end of our bike tour but you’re free to opt for beach holiday to Mafia Island or Zanzibar, we are happy to organize this for you.
